In the long and fascinating history of firearms, the Diamond Eagle Artillery Luger, “One of 25,” is the most spectacular Luger ever created. Indeed, many who have viewed it say it is the most beautiful firearm of any type they have ever seen. With four, inlaid, brilliant-cut Diamonds, inlaid solid 24-Karat Gold and generous coverage of Germanic hand-engraving, it looks like a piece Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany would have had custom gunsmithed to the tastes of Czar Nicholas II of Russia for a Presentation-of-State to him for display in his fabulous collection of Fabergé Jewels. (As a footnote to history, had the Kaiser presented this to the Czar, maybe the Czar would have more-firmly resisted Russian militarists’ quick and fateful mobilization against German forces, which could have avoided World War I).
Artillery Lugers were made only in the World War I years, between 1914 and 1918, and are so marked (with some of these transferred to comply with the Treaty of Versailles and marked 1920). They were made only by DWM (Deutsche Waffen and Munitions Fabriken) and by Royal Arsenal at Erfurt. Each of the Lugers in this limited edition is one of these rare, genuine, original German Artillery Lugers made during 1914-1918. With its distinctive long barrel (eight inches), the Artillery Model is to Lugers what the Buntline is to Colts. To take advantage of the increased accuracy, a precision-machined, adjustable, 100-800 meter tangent rear sight was also fitted. Both the rarity and value of the standard, field-grade Artillery Lugers are great. But, with the unsurpassed and unequaled beauty of the Diamond Eagle Artillery Luger, each of these—only 25—looks like a piece that could have once been owned by the Kaiser himself. In actuality, no Kaiser, Czar, King or Emperor—indeed, no one—has ever owned a Luger as beautiful as this. Following disassembly and close scrutiny, each hand-picked original Artillery Luger is custom mirror polished by our expert gun polishers who have perfected this delicate art on more museum-quality firearms than any men in world history. After weeks of study of many different engraving patterns, and after hand-engraving numerous test plates, classic German scrollwork patterns were selected from other fine German firearms. The intricate engraved designs include a tiny military cross in the center of the panoply on the barrel, this device being prominent in many Prussian and German military awards of the late 1800s and early 1900s.
The most complicated part of the hand engraving is the process of hand inlaying the four, brilliant-cut Diamonds and the solid 24-Karat Gold inlays. The 24-Karat Gold bezels that hold the Diamonds and the 24-Karat Gold inlays are cut by hand and precisely hammer-inlaid into the steel. The inlays include: the Imperial German Eagle, the four barrel bands, the borders around the side of the slide and the rear sight base, and borders in the backstrap. To successfully achieve this, the steel of the pistol must be undercut—wider at the bottom than at the top to form a “lip”, so the solid 24-Karat Gold can be tapped in to hold itself in place and not pop out when the pistol is fired. All the scroll engraving is accentuated by gold-gilt infill, and the hand-engraving, en suite, across the 24-Karat Gold plated surfaces (trigger, safety, frame latch and grip screws), is, in turn, infilled with gun blacking to accentuate that hand engraving. The plating, which also covers the front sight screw, rear-sight pin, rear-sight screw and magazine release, is to Jewelers Grade-Heavy thickness, for lasting beauty and value. Even the bluing is custom, to high-gloss black, using the high temperature (298 degrees) heat/immersion method. The grips are custom made of beautiful walnut, deluxe-finished in keeping with the museum quality exhibited with this piece. Even the magazine features the wooden end cap.
